भारत की जेलों में इस समय करीब 17,000 महिलाएं कैद हैं. इनमें से करीब 6000 आजीवन कारावास पर हैं. देश में महिलाओं के लिए कुल 18 जेलें हैं और सिर्फ 4 जेलें खुली जेलें हैं.
